The confident young Scottish band Mànran, with well-known members like Norrie MacIver and Gary Innes, are trying to be the first band of the 21st century to get a Gaelic song into the the Top 40. (Runrig and Capercaillie managed it at the end of the 20th century.)

Briosgaidean Nollaige / Christmas biscuits

 Margaidhean Nollaige sa Ghearmailt

Tòisichidh an Nollaig gu math tràth sa Ghearmailt, leis na Margaidhean Nollaige a bhios ann ceithear no coig seachdainean ro Nollaig fhèin anns na bailtean beaga is mòra air feadh na dùthcha. Ged a tha feadhainn dhiubh an là an-diugh aig nach eil ach sùil air pròthaid, mar a tha e aig àm Nollaige ann an àiteachan eile cuideachd, ‘s e cho tradiseanta ‘s a tha a’ mhòrchuid dhiubh fhathast a tha cho iongantach agus tarraingeach do luchd-tadhail à dùthchannan eile.

Bho thùs bha na mairghaidean ann airson cothrom a thoirt dhan luchd-ceàirde ionadail agus siubhail an cuid bathair a reic, agus dha na daoine, gu h-àiridh air an dùthaich, bathar sònraichte fhaighinn aon turas sa bhliadhna co-dhiù. Agus fiu’s an-diugh fhèin, tha rudan brèagha ri fhaotainn san àm ron Nollaig nach bi thu a’ faicinn anns na bùithtean àbhaisteach no aig amannan eile.   continue reading…

Sligh’-uisge a’ Chrìonain / The Crinan Canal

‘S dòcha gum faca sibh prògram-telebhisean ‘Coast‘ mìos no dhà air ais, far am b’ urrainn dhuibh na slighean-uisge agus an costa an iar fhaicinn eadar Glaschu agus Inbhir Nis? Chòrd sin riumsa gu mòr oir bha mise is mo mhàthair dìreach anns an sgìre sin – costa an iar Earra-Ghàideil – airson ar saor-làithean am bliadhna, agus ‘s beag an dùil a bha againn na dearbh àitichean fhaicinn a-rithist air an telebhisean. Chunnaic sinn iomadh àite eachdraidheal ùidheil thall an-sin (agus ‘s dòcha gun dèilig mi riutha uair eile) ach bha aon rud ann a rinn uiread de dhruidheadh oirnn ‘s gu bheil mi airson sgrìobhadh mu dheidhinn – Sligh’-uisge a’ Chrìonain. continue reading…

 30 bliadhna Fèis Rois!

Anns a’ P&J an-diugh:

Julie Fowlis na tosgaire ùr; pròiseact ùr ann an sgoil shònraichte Baile Dhubhthaich le Mairearad Green; raon ùr ‘Fèis nan Oileanach Gàidhlig’; cuirm-ciùil aig Celtic Connections 2011.

30 years of Fèis Rois! Julie Fowlis as new ambassador; new project in St Duthus special needs school, Tain, with Mairearad Green; new Gaelic Students’ Fèis;  a major concert at Celtic Connections 2011.

Read all about it in the P&J.

Tha mi air a bhith a’ coimhead air na prògraman Mòid air BBC Alba agus tha mi uabhasach toilichte gu bheil balach òg à Baile Dhubhthaich anns a’ chuirm-ciùil mu deireadh le òran eibhinn:  Eoghann Peutan.

I’ve been watching the various programmes from the  Mod in Caithness on BBC Alba and I’m absolutely delighted that a young Tain lad is in the final (prizewinners’) concert, with an amusing song about a party: Ewan Beaton.

Meal do naidheachd, Eoghainn! Congratulations!

Agus mealaibh ur naidheachd, a Mhòid agus a Ghallaibh! Caithness put on a great Mod despite all the fuss about supposedly not having any Gaelic heritage.

Watch again on the i-player, about 1 hour in:
