Bidh Niall Iain Dòmhnallach a’ tòiseachadh an dùbhlan-iomraidh aige thairis air a’ Chuan Siar a Tuath ann an 2012 a-nis, oir bha cus duilgheadasan practaigeach ann ron thuras a bha air a phlanadh am bliadhna. Tha e ag obair air a bhàta ann an Steòrnabhagh a-nis agus Dihaoine chuir e dhan mhuir e airson a’ chiad thurais. Ciamar a chaidh a’ chiad cheum seo?  Bha Niall Iain dòchasach gu leòr agus cha robh briseadh-dùil aige. Tha e a’ lorg luchd-urrais fhathast agus ‘s e carthannas as fhiach taic a thoirt dha!

Seo bhideo beag a’ chuir air bhog / short video of launch : https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=207267325986229

Niall Ian Macdonald will be setting off on his North Atlantic rowing challenge in 2012 now, as there were too many practical difficulties before the planned trip this year. He’s been working on the boat in Stornoway and on Friday he tried her out in the sea for the first time . How did it this first step go? He had been hopeful all would be well, and he wasn’t disappointed. He’s still looking for sponsors, and it’s a charity worth supporting!

Sgeulachd Jan is Griet

Nuair a chuala mi an abairt sin a’ chiad turas, smaoinich mi mu dheidhinn seann sgeulachd a dh’innis caraid à Chologne dhomh air an ionad-margaidh anns a’ phairt as sine den bhaile, nuair a thug mi sùil air ìomhaigh de sheanailear. ’S e an fhìrinn a th’ anns an sgeulachd seo, ged a tha i nas coltaiche ri fionnsgeul.

Bha duine òg bochd aig àm a’ Chogaidh Deich Bliadhna air Fhichead a’ fuireach ann an Köln.  B’ e Jan von Werth an t-ainm a bha air agus ged a bha e bochd, bha e miannaich air adhartas. Ghabh e gaol air Griet, caileag bhòidheach a bha na searbhanta ann an taigh ceannaiche bheartaich. Thathar ag ràdh gum faca e i a’ chiad turas nuair a bha e a’ coimhead às dèidh nan each anns a’ mhargadh far am biodh ise a’ ceannach am biadh gach latha.  Bha esan ag iarraidh a pòsadh, ach b’ e an ceannaiche ris an robh dùil aicese pòsadh na àite, agus chuir i air falbh e. continue reading…

Bonnaich / Bannocks

Bha mi a’ bruidhinn  air Skype ri oileanach Gàidhlig anns na Stàitean Aonaichte agus fhuair mi a-mach gu bheil gach duine eòlach air an fhacal ‘bannock’ ann an Ameireaga a Tuath mar ainm a th’ air aran simplidh a nì luchd-campachaidh, agus gum bidh mòran daoine a’ creidsinn gur e facal a thàinig bho na treubhan dùthchasach Canèidianach (leithid Cree) a th’ ann. Tha e coltach ged-thà gun d’ fhuair iad am facal – agus gu ìre na reasabaidhean bunasach fhèin – bhon luchd-tuineachaidh Albannach, gu h-àraidh bhon luchd-seilge, aig an robh mòran ceanglaichean leis a’ mhuinntir ionadail an sin. Bha iadsan air an t-slighe fad na h-ùine agus a’ dèanamh bhonnach air an tèine-champachaidh, le min-fhlùir, uisge agus ‘s dòcha beagan saille is salann, air maide, air clach no air greideal. Cha robh na treubhan eòlach air min-fhlùir à gràn mar chruithneachd, eòrna no choirche ro sin, ged a bha gràin fiadhaich agus sìol dùthchasach eile aca a rèir coltais leis an dèanadh iad ‘frybread’, taois air a fraigheachadh ann an saill.

Òran traidiseanta bòidheach agus beagan dìomhair,  freagarrach do àm na bliadhna – mu chaileag nach do gabh a’ chomhairle aice fhèin, a rèir coltais! Mar chuimhneachan air Iseabail Nic Asgaill, a chaochail gun dùil ris o chionn ghoirid, a sheinneadh an t-òran seo cho àlainn ri smeòrach i-fhèin.

Thig an smeòrach as t-Earrach
Thig a’ chuthag ’s a’ Chèitein
‘S bidh gach eun anns an doire
Cumail coinneamh ri chèile
Seinn ciùil air bhàrr chrannaibh
‘S air bharraibh nan geugan
Agus mise ‘s mo leannan
Dol nas fhaide bho chèile

Tha mo chìnn air an fhleasgach
Dhonn leadannach bhòidheach
Dhan a chinneadh nach strìochdadh
‘S e de iarfhuil Chlann Dòmhnaill
‘S mòr gum b’fhearr dhomh bhi agad
Le beagan de stòras
Na le buaile chrodh ballach agus
Balach nach b’eòlach

Comhairle bheirinns’ air caileig
Gun bhith amaideach gòrach
Gun i thoirt a gaol falaich
Do bhalach nach b’eòlach
Bidh e briathrach ri tighinn
‘S bidh a chridhe na ròitean
‘S bidh a shùil a’s a dhèidh
Ach cò an roghainn as bòidhche

I was saddened to hear about the sudden death of Ishbel Macaskill. She was the Queen of Gaelic singers and a great teacher and inspiration to  many, especially through the Fèisean.
